There is a brief bio on the “about coach” page of the site. For those of you who are interested, we will be making a more extensive bio about Coach Komen in the coming months. »Back to Top
The training programs at Coach Komen benefit all level of runners from beginners to elite runners, from distances of 5km to full marathons. You don’t need to be elite runner to be coached by Coach Komen (but, of course, you can be). »Back to Top
The first step may be to email Coach Komen of your interest in his coaching program, especially if there are questions that you may have that are not addressed here. But then…
You will want to register and then log in as a member to the site. You will be directed to fill out the questionnaire form and a required waiver that allows Coach Komen to work with and preliminarily evaluate you.
After filling out the “intake forms” you can proceed to select the appropriate training package.
Once you have determined which package best suites your needs, you can make your payment through payment processing area via Google Checkout.
After payment has been made, and depending on your level of membership, Coach Komen will do either one of two things:
He will begin to construct your schedule based on the info you have provided in your intake forms;
Or, he or one of his staff will make contact about setting an appointment for your full, in-person evaluation to greater determine your fitness level, capabilities and needs in running. This coupled with the info you provided in the intake forms will be the foundation on which your program will be designed for you.
After the evaluation, coach will communicate with you further about what he has outlined in your training plan. The basic aspects of your training—everything from days off, actual days on, your long runs to workout days will be covered to make sure that the big picture is understood and is something that you feel you can commit to.
We usually start with your goals and interests in running. For example, if your desire is to run faster 5K races, a plan that takes into account where you are now will be design for you in order to facilitate your improvement in that specific area. The same applies for most other goals, distances (not including sprinting distances) or types of running. Coach Komen has years of experience in the formulation of these types of programs and will be happy to do one specifically catered for you. »Back to Top
This depends entirely on the level of support you are seeking and therefore which package you choose. There are many opportunities for communication with the Coach. From face to face interaction, to email, to the correspondence through your individual weekly report, to phone consultations. It all depends of you individual needs. »Back to Top
Again this is dependent on what type of program you choose and what level of support you are looking for, but there are essentially 2 or 3 programs in our service offerings that would provide this level of contact with the coach. They are face to face coaching and online coaching with limited face to face consultation and also the group coaching.
For the most part, the face to face interaction with your coach will happen twice a month and in limited cases, once a week for the people getting face to face coaching. For individuals getting online coaching with face to face consultation, they will have a one time consultation and full evaluation from Coach Komen at the time that they begin their program. If they continue at this level they will have a scheduled meeting/run/workout with the coach or one of his staff once a month. »Back to Top
The are two evaluation processes available through Coach Komen. The first involves analyzing the intake forms. The second, incorporates the intake forms but goes a step farther and includes and in person evaluation as well. »Back to Top
Every week coach will review your weekly report and monitor your progress and the improvement you are making. Based on what is seen from these things, adjustments will be made for the next week. It cannot be stressed enough how crucial this part is to the efficacy of your training. You must do this report or you will miss out of the full benefit of the training. »Back to Top
The first thing that we can say is that attempting to achieve any goal you have is obviously going to take some amount dedication and prioritization. It has to be important to you.
That being said, Coach Komen will do as much as he can to make sure that your schedule is something that is manageable for you, given all of the rest of your commitments. Additionally, if there are specific times that are even more hectic than other and it is difficult for you to keep to your training schedule, your coach will be able to make any adjustments that are necessary. »Back to Top
Similarly to the question above about managing the training with a busy work schedule, we would say that there needs to be a definite level of commitment and mindset from the beginning. With that in mind if you are not able to complete your training as scheduled, you don’t need to worry. This is one of the benefits of having a coach that can adjust schedules accordingly (on the fly). Simply notify the coach and an adjustment can be made to your program. The last thing that you want to do is adjust the schedule on your own. This has the potential to cause problems or injuries. So as long as the adjustment request are reasonable and not a chronic occurrence, they can be accommodated. »Back to Top
There are different service levels so it’s not a one size fits all approach. Depending of your exact program you will have the opportunity to meet with you coach regularly and/or communicate with him via email and the weekly report. This enables you to have opportunity to raise your problem you face during your training with coach advice motivation and inspiration when you feel you need. »Back to Top
I heard once that in the course of time that a commercial airplane is in the air, going from one destination to another, it is, technically, off track over 90% of the time. What this means is that the plane and it’s pilots are in a constant state of course correction.
“Course Correction” is precisely what your opportunities for consultation afford you. The feedback from your training applied correctly can give you the edge you need to see that gains you desire. Consulting with your coach is one of the best ways to provide this. The correspondence can also help you stay motivated during your training and will allow you to have the confidence of knowing that at any given point in your training your right on target. »Back to Top
Even if you are either used to running faster or want to train yourself to run faster, that doesn’t necessarily mean that your body is capable of doing this optimally…yet.
The program that has been built for you is based on your current fitness level and the final goal to be achieve. It also takes into account all sort of components from Coach Komen’s multiple decades long journey with running, along with the research backed techniques for optimal running. Without getting into divulging proprietary info, suffice it to say that your program is not arbitrary. It’s meant to get you to where you want to go. In order to that, you will need to follow a specific process. If you do too much, too quickly, or you don’t allow yourself the proper recovery on the appropriate days, you are opening yourself up to greater likely hood of injury. No one can guarantee that you will be injury free. But there are proven ways to set yourself up for the best chance to run that way.
Follow the program and you will be much more likely to reach your desired goal. »Back to Top
Much like the previous answer, the speed at which you are scheduled to run is very specific and intentional. It has been determined that you should have some challenging days in order to reach your goal. However, if you feel that the pace is too demanding, it can be adjusted. The same concerns about doing too much, too soon applies here. »Back to Top
Remember that a house can not be built in one day. The program that I create for you is not some generic cookie cutter program and it does take a little time to pull it together and then make sure you adequately understand how to go about the implementation of the program. Once all of this occurs, we’re all set to start. »Back to Top
Coach Komen has various methodologies for evaluation and is very well versed in the latest as well as time tested means of reaching individual peak performance levels. Your program will be designed by your coach based on your current fitness level and your desired goals. »Back to Top

If you are ever sick, you should immediately notify your coach so that he will know you’re sick and you training may be affected. Of course how you handle you health is a decision that you must make with your doctor, but it is our recommendation that you do not run while you are sick. Your health comes first. If your doctor approves of you running and says you are ready to run again your coach will adjust your training program and get you back on track. »Back to Top
Similar to the question above, you will first need to notify Coach Komen about the nature of your injury. And again, you will want to consult your doctor to know how to proceed. If you and your doctor deem it as something to “run through,” you can ask your coach to see if modifications to your program need to be made. Injuries could be a sign of any number of things: maladjustment to the new stress load you are exposing your muscles to, if you are the beginner. And if you are an advance runner, it could be maladjustment to the intensity or the volume. It could be nutrition, ineffective stretching routines, improper running form and a hosts of others. Many of these can be investigated and your coach will attempt to address whatever comes up. »Back to Top
